The place was settled in 1830 and in 1845 was named for Prince Albert (1819-1861), consort of Queen Victoria.
In 1849 Peter and John Duffy discovered a bituminous black hydrocarbon yielding oil and gas.
It was named albertite and ore was shipped to Boston for processing until 1875.
