The place was settled in 1810 and the post office was established in 1857.
The community includes Joney Settlement and Hayward Settlement. The community takes its present name from the river, name was derived from the Maliseet Olnegansek, translated by New Brunswick historian William Francis Ganong as 'little portage stream'.
