New Brunswick Tourism Region : Southeastern New Brunswick
Description From Owner:
- It was settled in 1700 by Acadians who were expelled in 1755 and re-settled in 1761 by New Englanders.
- B. Verte appears on a map as early as 1701, named for salt water grasses which in summer give the shallow bay the appearance of a vast meadow.
- Provincial surveyor general Thomas Baillie noted in 1832: 'Bay Vert gets its name from the quantity of salt water grass which grows in the mud and floats on the surface.'
- The land surrounding the bay was granted as a seigneury in 1676 to Alexandre Leneuf de La Valliére et de Beaubassin (1666-1712).
- Baie Verte Waterfowl Village embraces three freshwater ponds and one of the largest areas of salt marsh in the Maritimes. Off Route 16, intersection of Route 970, 3 km S of Port Elgin.
- Werner Rosswog's Winegarden Estates, NB's first winery (1991) offers 70 brands of wines, liqueurs and brandies at 851 Route 970. (Editor's note: this winery produces a superb red 'Dry grape wine').
