- The name is descriptive from a Basque word barratxo or barrachoa meaning sand bar or little bar. It was adapted by the French to include shallow bodies of fresh or salt water sheltered from the ocean by a narrow strip of land or a sand bar.
- The toponym Barachois is found in all four Atlantic provinces.
