2540 KING GEORGE HWY |
New Brunswick Tourism Region : Mirimichi River Valley
Description From Owner:
- In 1686 the Micmac knew the place as Nabeltagook, or 'dead,' with reference to the sluggish waters of the river.
- There is no definitive explanation of this place name. According to historian William Ganong, 'tradition derives it from the name of a Micmac chief, Bartholomew LaBogue or Barthélemi Labauve.'
- And historian Alan Rayburn offers that this person was named: 'Balt Bogue by the Indians and Bartabogue by the French and English.' The place was settled by Scottish immigrants in 1812 and Irish immigrants in 1822.
- By 1815 Alexander MacDonald had built a two-storey sandstone Georgian-style house on a commanding site at the confluence of the Bartibog R. with Miramichi Bay.
- Today guided tours are offered through MacDonald Farm Provincial Historic Site at 600 Route 11.
