New Brunswick Tourism Region : Mirimichi River Valley
Description From Owner:
- In 1758, Charles Deschamps de Boishébert et de Raffetot (1727-1797) established a refugee camp for 3,500 survivors of the expulsion of the Acadians here and on an adjoining point now called Wilson Point after New Jersey Loyalist John Wilson.
- The Micmac called the island Quoomeneegook, 'pine island,' and Niktawak, 'at the river forks.' On a 1765 land grant the island is called Beobares Island and later Beauheberts Island.
- When John and Alexander Fraser ran their shipyard here from 1826 to 1837, it was called Fraser's Island. From 1839 to 1849 it was Russell's Island when John Russell operated a shipyard here.
- John Harley operated the shipyard from 1850 to 1857 and it was called Harley's Island and then it was Mitchell's Island because it was owned by Peter Mitchell.
- Eventually the island became known as Beaubears Island, a corrupted version of Boishébert's name. Birthplace of John James Fraser (1829-1896), premier from 1878 to 1882.
