Description From Owner:
- From 1860 to 1872 the post office here was Rankins Mills. The name was changed to Benton in 1872 and four name origins are offered by historians:
- a) named by railway officials for Revolutionary War hero Thomas R. Benton;
- b) a surveyor who laid out that section of railway in 1871;
- c) an Indian guide;
- d) a place in the United States chosen at random for the post office name.
- Eel River No. 3 (Benton) covered bridge, built in 1927, is off Route 165 on Benton Road.
