First shown on a 1685 map as Maktopstik, Micmac for 'big black rock.'
On later maps as Pointe Memchigan, Pte de Techeniquet and Tesheniket Point.
In 1845 it was named Black Point by Henry Wolsey Bayfield (1795-1885), Admiralty Surveyor of the Great Lakes, who also surveyed the coastlines of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island during the 1840s and 1850s.
