Description From Owner:
- The Bliss family moved to New Brunswick following the American Revolution and became part of the New Brunswick Loyalist establishment.
- A characteristic of this group was that they reserved official appointments for members of their chosen families.
- While John Murray Bliss (1771-1834) was administrator of the province in 1824 during the absence of Lieut Gov. Howard Douglas (1776-1861), he named his son, George Pidgeon Bliss to the positions of: surveyor general, receiver general and auditor general.
- When Douglas returned, two of these positions were promptly revoked and young Bliss wound up holding only the position of receiver general.
