- The name is derived from the Passamaquoddy Pokabec of unknown meaning, now a local folk expression in the form of a curse: 'Woe unto you Bocabecers.' Older residents use the expression only in jest, but it is deeply rooted in local folklore.
- It originated in the early nineteenth century with two of the founding families, the Hansons and Turners. The young men of these families were working miles away in a winter lumber camp when a senior Hanson died here.
- At the funeral service the Rev. William Mullen condemned the younger Hanson and Turner boys for not attending the service with the words: 'Woe unto ye Bocabecers, ye Hansons and ye Turners, that ye would not come out of the woods to bury your father.'
