397 HWY 530 |
New Brunswick Tourism Region : Southeastern New Brunswick
Description From Owner:
- The place is named for an Acadian family descended from Irish settler Roger Kuessey who came to the area in the 1600s.
- The name was variously spelled as Casey, Caissy, Quessy and Kuessey. Other Caseys receiving land grants in the area were Belony, Philip, Francis, Gabriel and Urban.
- Until 1983 the place was called Cassie Cape, but New Brunswick is Canada's only officially bilingual province and makes an effort to have place names reflect the predominant language of the local population.
- . So in 1983 highway signs were changed from Cassie Cape to Cap de Caissie, prompting an outcry from both anglophone and francophone residents.
- A petition protesting the name change was circulated.
- A compromise was eventually reached: the name was officially changed to Caissie Cape / Cap de Caissie, making the place one of two populated places in NB with a name approved in both official languages. (The other is Grand Falls / Grand-Sault).
