The place was settled in 1878 under the Free Grants Act. In 1904 the post office was established as Canous.
Canoose stream which flows W from Canoose L. to the St. Croix R. is believed to have been named from the Passamaquoddy name Kanoosik, meaning 'pickerels.'
The name appears on a 1792 map as Keenouse, on various plans between 1796 and 1799 as Cannuse, Kenusi and Canouse. Also in the area are Canoose Flowage, Canoose Ledges and Canoose Rips.
