New Brunswick Tourism Region : Southeastern New Brunswick
Description From Owner:
- The Micmac called the place Wuktaamook, and the meaning of the word is unknown. It is first found on an 1809 land petition as Jeauriman and later Jourimain.
- Some historians believe the name derived from a German settler and was corrupted from 'German,' but it is more likely to have been a French settler.
- The name applies to the island and to a nearby cape and is locally pronounced 'jer-mayn.'
- Here there is Cape Jourimain Nature Centre, with interpretation centre, wildlife observation tower, scenic dunes, beaches, lookouts, a Provincial Visitor Information Centre and 17 km of hiking trails across 640 hectares.
- Within the nature centre is Cape Jourimain Lighthouse, a 16 m (51 -foot) white octagonal heritage structure with a unique embellishment around the top deck. The lighthouse was established in 1870 and refurbished in 1983.
