- The place was settled in 1785 and the name derives from the Passamaquoddy word Kitchimcook or K'tchumcook.
- The precise translation ofthat word is not known, but it possibly meant 'place of big gravel bar,' referring to the bar joining Minister's Island to the mainland, or Skumcook meaning 'narrow entrance.'
- Chamcook is home to the Atlantic Salmon Interpretive Information and Visitor Centre, opened in 1988 by the Atlantic Salmon Federation, which features an aquarium through which Chamcook Creek flows.
