The place was settled by Loyalists in 1784 and first known as Harbour by Chance, referring to the navigational hazards marking the harbour entrance.
Today's mariners are warned by The Bay of Fundy Pilot that lists the reefs and ledges and advises: 'Small vessels with local knowledge can anchor in the inner part of Chance Harbour.'
When the post office opened in 1866 the name became Chance Harbour.
