New Brunswick Tourism Region : Southeastern New Brunswick
Description From Owner:
- The community takes its name from the river which is shown on an 1832 map as South Branch of the Richibucto.
- On an 1835 map it is called South Branch and on 1851 maps it is shown as Coal River and Coal Branch of the Richibucto.
- The river is named for a six-mile coal seam at Beersville, 12 km downstream which was being worked before 1832 and is the earliest coal-mining area in North America. In 1885 the post office was called Coal Branch Station.
