The place was settled in 1838 and first known as Williamsburg Corner.
When the post office came in 1885, the community took its name from nearby Cross Creek which flows SE to the Naskwaak R. and Southwest Miramichi R.
Cross Creek was named for the early portage route between the Nashwaak and Miramichi rivers. It is shown on a 1799 map as Nabudagan and on deeds in 1827 as Labudagun Stream.
