On a 1755 map the place appears as Carriage Harbour and on a 1772 map as Duck Cove.
On an 1825 map the place is shown as Dippoo Harbor, but from 1852 the post office has been Dipper Harbour, named for the Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) or Dipper duck.
