New Brunswick Tourism Region : Mirimichi River Valley
Description From Owner:
- The Micmac called the place Eskumunaak, or 'outlook place.' In 1959 in a sudden storm, 35 fishermen and 22 boats from here and nearby Baie-Sainte-Anne were lost at sea in hurricane-force winds and 60 foot waves.
- When the men set out that morning the weather report from Halifax called for light winds. Later in the evening warnings of a violent storm were issued, but none of the boats was equipped with a radio.
- The youngest victim was only 13 years old. The tragedy is commemorated with a 10,000 pound stone sculpture, Fisherman's Memorial, by Acadian artist Claude Roussel of Edmundston.
