The place was first known as French Village when two French families, Robichaud and Muzeroll settled in the 1760s.
John Noble bought some land from the French settlers and for a time the place was called Noble Settlement.
In 1851 Hardwicke Parish was established, named for Benjamin Hardwick of London, England, who contributed to James Hudson's Church of England missions here and who donated a communion service to the church in nearby Bay du Vin.
In 1853 the post office opened as Hardwicke.
