- The place was settled in 1861 and named for Bishop John Sweeny (1821-1901) who helped settlers obtain land in the area. The post office operated from 1862-1945.
- . In 1871 Johnville and area had a population of 500. The legendary Klondike Kate (1868-1932) was born here.
- The legendary and 'real' Klondike Kate was born Katherine Ryan in Johnville in 1868. (There were at least 17 Klondike Kates including a famous prostitute, but Ryan was the original).
- When the Yukon gold rush started in 1898 she left her then home in Seattle to trek to the tent town of Whitehorse and open Kate's Café.
- She parlayed that into a hotel, but also raised money to support a Roman Catholic church, acted as a community nurse and was known far and wide for her generosity and compassion.
- She never married or had children and was the first female member of the North West Mounted Police.
