Description From Owner:
- In 1722 the British Parliament passed an act prohibiting the cutting of white pine trees in the king's woods in North America.
- When the first land grants were made in New Brunswick there was always the stipulation 'saving and reserving nevertheless to us, our heirs and successors, all pine trees.'
- From time to time, however, the surveyor of the woods would grant licences to cut and take away such timber as was considered 'unfit for His Majesty's service,'
- but only after inspection and the marking with the Broadarrow any trees considered fit for use as masts for the Royal Navy (those at least 30 cm in diameter).
- The licencee could then take away timber that was 'unfit for His Majesty's service.' Kingsclear Parish was established in 1786 and likely named for the clearings left by the cutting of masts for the Royal Navy.
- The place may have been named by Edward Winslow, Surveyor of the Kings Woods under Sir John Wentworth. The post office opened here under that name in 1849.
