540 MAIN ST |
New Brunswick Tourism Region : Fundy Shore
Description From Owner:
- The area was established in 1765 as Almeston Township, possibly named for Olmaston in Derbyshire, ancestral home of Sir Robert Wilmot who had a land grant here and was an uncle of Montague Wilmot, Governor of NS.
- The name soon changed to Amesbury Township, likely named for James Amesbury, a Halifax merchant.
- The first settlers were Loyalists from the Dutchess C. region of New York state and the name of Kingston Parish, established in 1786, may have been inspired by Kingston on New York's Hudson R.
- Some historians suggest the name was an attempt by the Loyalists to underscore their allegiance to the crown.
- The Carter House at 3366 Route 845, open mid-June to early Sept., is a museum that traces the local way of life since the landing of the Loyalists in 1783.
