. The name is from the French I 'étang, meaning 'the pond.'
In 1689 French map maker V. M. Coronelli noted the place as Havre a Letano but by 1744 it was shown on other maps as Havre a l'Etang.
The post office opened as Letang in 1893 but some locals still spell the place name L'Etang.
