Description From Owner:
- Three New Brunswick communities were first called Hardscrabble, a name that suggests great hardship in scratching a living from the soil.
- 1) In Carleton C., Upper Woodstock, 3 km N of Woodstock was called Hardscrabble prior to 1854 because the St. John R. here used to be difficult to ascend by boat.
- 2) In Queens C., Speights Corner, 11 km NE of Welsford was settled around 1885 and first called Hardscrabble. When the post office opened in 1892 it was called Speights Corner after postmaster A. F. Speight. The place was abandoned before WWI.
- 3) In Northumberland C., 5 km NW of Blackville, Lockstead was settled in 1878 under the Free Grants Act and first called Hardscrabble.
- The post office opened in 1915 as Locksteed and the name later changed to Lockstead.
