When the post office opened in 1854 the place was called by the Maliseet name Pisarinco, for which a definitive translation has not been found.
In 1903 the name was changed to honour Sir John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll and Marquess of Lorne (1845-1914), Gov.-Gen. of Canada from 1878 to 1883.
Musquash Head Lighthouse was established in 1879 and is still active. It is an octagonal concrete tower on Lighthouse Road. There is no vehicle access, but a 1.4 km hike will get you there.
Manawagonish Island Nature Preserve: The name was derived from Maliseet Manawagonessek, 'place for clams. ' There's also a Manawagonish cove, creek, island and road. The island is a bird sanctuary located just off the Irving Nature Park.
