New Brunswick Tourism Region : Mirimichi River Valley
Description From Owner:
- Newcastle from which Lower Newcastle takes its name became part of the City of Miramichi in 1995.
- Ironically, when the town was established in 1790, the name Miramichi was proposed, but the sheriff, Benjamin Marston, argued that Miramichi was 'too difficult to pronounce and spell' and proposed Newcastle.
- That name honoured Thomas Pelham Holles, Duke of Newcastle (1693-1768) who was Britain's prime minister from 1754 to 1762.
- The 'Great Miramichi Fire' of Oct. 7, 1825, took 200 lives and razed Newcastle and approximately one-fifth of the province in a 15,550-square kilometre rough triangle between Richibucto, Beldune and almost to Fredericton.
- A new town arose from the ashes built on shipbuilding and lumber export and was incorporated as a town in 1899.
