Newcastle from which Lower Newcastle takes its name became part of the City of Miramichi in 1995.
Ironically, when the town was established in 1790, the name Miramichi was proposed, but the sheriff, Benjamin Marston, argued that Miramichi was 'too difficult to pronounce and spell' and proposed Newcastle.
That name honoured Thomas Pelham Holles, Duke of Newcastle (1693-1768) who was Britain's prime minister from 1754 to 1762.
The 'Great Miramichi Fire' of Oct. 7, 1825, took 200 lives and razed Newcastle and approximately one-fifth of the province in a 15,550-square kilometre rough triangle between Richibucto, Beldune and almost to Fredericton.
A new town arose from the ashes built on shipbuilding and lumber export and was incorporated as a town in 1899.
