- The area was settled in the early 19th century by members of the Lutz family who were part of the 1765 Pennsylvania German migration to this region.
- When the post office opened in 1859 Jeremiah Lutes was the postmaster and named the place Lutes Mountain. Previously the place had been called Moncton Mountain, Mountain Settlement and Monmouth.
