The place may have been named as early as the 1770s for Benjamin Mace, a surgeon with the 22nd Regiment.
The Passamaquoddy knew the place as Musquasitkik, 'place for beans.' The name Mace's Bay has been consistent since 1854, before which it was known as Mesh's Bay, Maise's Bay, Masons Bay, Maes's Bay and Mace's Bay.
