Description From Owner:
- The place was settled in 1822 and named for John Mascarene who had received a large land grant here.
- The post office operated here from 1860-1944. In 1866 Mascarene was a farming and fishing community with about 26 families. By 1871 it had a population of 200, but by 1904 the population had dropped to 150.
- The community then had the post office, two stores, a sardine factory, a church and a lighthouse.
