New Brunswick Tourism Region : Mirimichi River Valley
Description From Owner:
- John C. Miller (1818-1902) started a major development boom he came here in 1869 from Picton, Ontario, to establish a tanning extract operation using the bark of hemlock trees.
- Twenty years later there were five sawmills, a pulp-and-paper mill, barrel factory, plank mill, shingle mill, lath mill, wool-carding mill and a grist mill.
- The community was first called Milford, later Miramichi and in 1881 when the post office opened the place was named for Miller . . . but is also an industrial descriptive for the abundance of mills once located here.
