The brook is shown on a 1787 land plan as La Budagan.
On an 1832 map it appears as Nabudagan R. From the Maliseet Napudaagan for 'brook to follow,' (to reach the Southwest Miramichi R.). The post office opened in 1914 as Napudogan. In 1955 the name was changed to Napadogan.
