Description From Owner:
- Darlings Island honours Benjamin Darling of Marblehead, Massachusetts, a planter and trader.
- Historian Esther Clark Wright records that he bought the island in the 1770s for: 'Two bushels of corn, one barrel of flour, a grindstone, some powder and shot and sundry knives, hatchets and other implements.'
- The Maliseet named the Hammond R. Nahwijewauk, the meaning of which is not known. The river was renamed for Sir Andrew Snape Hammond (1738-1828), Lieut. Gov. of Nova Scotia 1780-1782, who received a land grant here in 1781.
- Darlings Island covered bridge, built in 1914, is off Route 100 on Darlings Island Road.
