- The place was first called Upper Smiths Creek when the post office opened in 1854 and in 1885 was renamed Newton after an early land grantee.
- In 1892 the name was changed to Newtown which is known as the location of the Oldfield Covered Bridge, named for the family on whose property it was erected in 1910.
- A sketch of this bridge was chosen for a 25-cent coin issued in 1992 to mark the 125th anniversary of Confederation.
