- The name is Micmac in origin and is from Toodoogoosk or Odoodooguech, for which meanings arc unknown.
- On a 1685 map the name is shown as R. toutegouch and in 1831 as Tattigouche and a year later as Tootoogoose or Fairy River. By 1896 it had become the Téte Gauche R.
- The village was laid out in 1841 as Kinsale and in 1885 the post office opened as Téte-iGouche River North Side. In 1901 the Geographic Board of Canada confirmed the name as Tetagouche.
