The post office opened here in 1912 as Upper Sicgas after the Siegas R. That name derived from the Maliseet Sayegosk, believed to mean 'obstructed river.'
.' It is shown on a 1787 map as Shiegask or Troublesome River. In 1943 Upper Siegas was renamed after the recently-formed local parish.
