The point extends into Long Reach and was known by the Maliseet as Kwesoweeamkeeuk for 'gravel beach point.'
On a 1696 land grant the point is shown as Point aux Chesnes, French for Oak Point.
Oak Point Lighthouse, established in 1869, is the original wooden salt-shaker tower, at 14.6 metres (48 feet) the tallest lighthouse on the St. John R.
