- The island is about 1/4-acre in size and named for a bizarre incident in the 1800s when a couple called Billy and Nan were crossing the lake on their way to get married.
- When they were overtaken by nightfall, Billy put Nan on an island and he spent the night on an adjacent island about 100 feet distant.
- Pemberton Ridge: In the 1860s the place was called Skedaddle Ridge because a number of U.S. draft dodgers settled here.
- The place was settled in the 1860s by Americans fleeing the Union military draft during the American Civil War.
- Following the war the place was abandoned. It was briefly resettled by locals and called Mapleton before being abandoned again.
