- The name is believed to derive from The Maliseet Penobsq Sips, 'stone brook.'
- William Stone was a land grantee here and for a time the station of the European and North American Railway station was Stones Brook.
- In Maliseet Penobsquct means 'chub,' a small, coarse fish. At various times the community was called Narraguagus, Stumptown and Upper Settlement.
- When the post office opened in 1852 the place was called Upper Sussex. It 1865 the name was changed to Penobsquis.
