Description From Owner:
- The name is Amerindian from the Micmac Elmugwadasik, a description of the tidal river 'is turned to one side.'
- The post office opened here in 1885. The name applies to the island, the town and Haut ('upper') Lameque.
- The name of the island was approved in 1974 after a local petition, replacing the earlier name Shippigan Island.
