- . In English the place name is 'fir (tree) point.' The area was settled in 1811 and first called Pointe-au-Grand-Sapin and later Pointe-aux-Sapins.
- In 1885 the post office opened as Point Sapin. In 1962 the name was changed to Pointe-Sapin.
- Pointe-Sapin Lighthouse (Rear Range) was established in 1903. The wooden salt-shaker tower is on Route 117 W. across from the Co-op wharf area.
