226 DE LA POSTE ST |
New Brunswick Tourism Region : Acadian Coast
Description From Owner:
- The community takes its name from the river which flows NE into Chaleur Bay and was known in Micmac as Pooksaak, 'narrow at the outlet.'
- Map maker J. B. L. Franquelin marked the river as R. Bout au Sac on his 1686 map, a name that translates from French as 'end of the bag.'
- The post office opened as Pockshaw in 1860 and when John J. Riordon became postmaster in 1892 he changed the name to Riordan. In 1915 the name officially became Pokeshaw.
