New Brunswick Tourism Region : St. John River Valley
Description From Owner:
- Restigouche County: Restigouche County became a separate entity, detached from Gloucester C., in 1837, taking its name from the Restigouche R.
- The river rises in Mada- waska C. near Quisibis Mountain, flows in a NE direction across Restigouche C., and empties into Baie des Chaleurs.
- The name may be traced to the Micmac Luslagooch, but the meaning of that word has become lost.
- The most popular conjecture for its meaning is 'good river.'
- A 55-kilometre section of the Restigouche running from near the Victoria C. line to the Quebec border, has been nominated by the provincial government to become a Canadian Heritage River for two main reasons:
- 1) The Restigouche once formed part of the Micmac transportation route to the St. Lawrence R. and,
- 2) it provides a habitat for a variety of rare plants, mosses and lichens and the endangered Canada lynx and osprey.
