- The post office opened in 1854 with the name derived from the Micmac Metdeppnnakeyaka, for 'red bank,' descriptive of the red-coloured river banks.
- Red Bank Indian Reserves 4 and 7 were established here in 1783 on 10,000 acres of land, later decreased to 3,397 acres.
- Red Bank is adjacent to Metepenagiag, for 3,000 years the site of an important Micmac village and New Brunswick's oldest continuously occupied community. Since 1975 more than 100 Micmac sites have been identified at Metepenagiag.
- The Augustine Mound discovered by Elder Joseph Augustine in 1972 and the nearby Oxbow location, have been officially designated National Historic Sites by the federal government.
- The archaeological excavations combined with careful study of the hundreds of artifacts dating back more than 24,000 years have provided a clear picture of the sophistication of the Micmac culture before the arrival of Europeans.
- This site has been called 'New Brunswick' s oldest village,' by archaeologists unravelling its history.
