Description From Owner:
- The community name results from a scheme launched by Lieut-Governor Sir Archibald Campbell (1769-1843).
- He decided it was unwise in military terms to rely solely on the St. John R. as the only means of transport between Fredericton and Grand Falls.
- He proposed a road 'where wheels would go, to be constructed in roughly a straight line, between the two points.'
- This road was accordingly started in 1831 and by 1837 had reached as far as Stanley, a distance of about 42 km N of Fredericton.
- The community, Royal Road, had a post office from 1862 to 1918. The designation 'Royal Road' is still used for this stretch of highway.

- The Royal Road began as a route from what is now the Stone Bridge in Fredericton North to the Tay Settlement. It was improved during the 1820s in response to the establishment of the Welsh settlement of Cardigan in 1819.
- It wasn't until 1831 that the route became known as the Royal Road, being incorporated into a new road which was to be an overland route connecting Fredericton and Grand Falls.
- The road to Stanley was built in 1835, following the Royal Road to a certain point where it veered off to Stanley. That road was called in fact, the Stanley Road, not the Royal Road.
