New Brunswick Tourism Region : Acadian Coast
Description From Owner:
- A number of theories exist to explain the origin of this place name.
- The most likely attributes it to Antoinette de Pons, Marquise de Guerchville, the wife of Charles du Plessis, Duc de Liancourt, governor of Paris in the early 17th century.
- She was a deeply religious woman who was responsible for raising funds to send missionaries to Acadia.
- The place may also have been named for Flavien de Saint-Pons, Abbé de Carignan, chaplain of the Carignan Regiment who came to New France in 1665.
- Other contenders for the name source are Abbé St-Poncy, who was at Port-Royal in 1725, or Pierre du Gua de Monts (1558-1628) who was made Governor of Pons in Saintonge for his support of Henry IV.
