- Early settlers had a hand mill to grind corn which they boiled in maple sap to make a porridge they called samp.
- In 1903 historian W. F. Ganong was told the origin of the place name by resident B. S. Thorne:
- 'My grandfather, working with his father, got tired of the porridge and the work of making the sugar and one morning said 'to hell with the Samp and Hill.''
