- The name honours Major-General Sir Thomas Saumarez (1760-1845) who served as administrator of New Brunswick in 1813.
- He saw service in the British army during the American Revolution and at the time of his appointment was commander-in-chief of the British troops in New Brunswick. The post office opened as Saumarez in 1931.
