- In 1755 the French had Fort Shepody at nearby Mary's Point and 328-metre-high Shepody Mountain is adjacent.
- Shepody Mountain is shown on a 1755 map as Naha Mountain and there's a popular story that the mountain got its name from a French crew who saw the top of the mountain rising above a fog bank and called it Chapeau Dieu which translates as 'God's Hat'.
- The name is from the Micmac for the river, Esedabit, 'the bay that turns back on itself,' referring to the many twists and turns of the Shepody River which flows E into Shepody Bay.
- The post office here was called Hopewell when it opened in 1865, but in 1919 the name was changed to Shepody.
