- The community takes its name from the creek which was named by the French, Riviere à Crapaud, for 'Toad River.' The place was settled in 1758 by French and was first called Fourche à Crapaud, 'Toad Forks.'
- By 1787 the place is shown on a land plan as Turtle Creek. The post office opened as Turtle Creek in 1858. Turtle Creek No. 4 (Jonah, Peter) covered bridge, built in 1912, is on Jonah Road.
